Introduction
There are essentially two types of garden swimming pools. Those that are embedded into the ground - "in ground" pools and those that sit above the ground - "above ground" pools. There are pros' and cons' to both. The "in ground" pools are more permanent and fit into the design of the garden, whereas sometimes "above ground" swimming pools can be a little obtrusive. However, the advantage of most "above ground" pools is that they are less permanent. If your space is relatively limited, you might want a pool in the summer but not want to give up the space in the winter. Portable "above ground" swimming pools are just the answer to this problem. Intex pools are a popular choice.

Planning approval

You will almost certainly require some form of planning approval and should investigate this thoroughly in respect of swimming pools and deck build and those very important Health & Safety issues.

General guidelines for positioning

Think of the entire pool area as a total swimming and leisure environment, with the pool as the focal point. The pool deck goes a long way in tying the pool itself in with the pool environment. Since swimming pools should be more than simply a basin to swim laps or cool off in, great care must be made to "set off" the pool in it's best position. For instance, while it may seem most "natural" to have a deck layout in which people have the house at their backs, this is not always desirable. A home with a striking, well-landscaped rear façade may well have that as its most aesthetic view, as opposed to a backyard fence and view of a neighbour's garden.

Swimming pools - what's best for the family

A pool close to the house is convenient and easy to watch over, but it may be very noisy for occupants of the house when there is a group of children playing and splashing in swimming pools. A pool set out in the garden needs to be visible from the house even if it is fenced to give some control of usage, but on the other hand, it can make the pool environment better for entertaining guests or to open up the yard.

The pool deck for large & small properties

The pool deck compliments and reflects the swimming pools themselves, so many of the considerations used in determining the size and shape of the deck will be considerations needed for the pool. On a large property, swimming pools and decks can be constructed well away from the house as a separate entity. This means that, typically, a larger deck would be designed in order to set that identity off. If the pool is set out in the yard away from the house, a freeform style design, possibly with a more natural set of finishes to complement the exterior landscaping, will probably work best.

On a smaller property, swimming pools may have to be located close to or adjoining the house itself. This makes it more a part of the home's architecture, and may have to have more formal lines eg. rectangular or oval shape in order to fit in with the homes' design. As an entity closely related to the home, the pool deck should be designed to match or complement the colour and materials found on the homes' exterior as opposed to those of the natural surroundings. Look at the types of material which you have used for garden edges, back of the house paths & any adjacent driveways. You should choose a deck finish for swimming pools that either blends in with these or is totally contrasting.
